The 1282 Chair is a contemporary design inspired by the Welsh stick chair, exploring how historical and cultural references can inform modern practice. Triggered by the manifesto Beyond the New by Hella Jongerius and Louise Schouwenberg, the project draws from Welsh heritage through focused research into traditional stick chairs.

The chair’s form and dimensions are guided by the naturally high, curved arms of these traditional examples, addressing modern ergonomic considerations through historical insight. Stainless steel was selected for its clarity, durability and suitability to the manufacturing process, creating a deliberate contrast to the original wooden typology.

The project reflects on what can be learned from the past, and how overlooked traditions, materials and processes can shape contemporary design.
